Four people were killed and seven others were injured in a stabbing spree in different places in Rockford, Illinois, on Wednesday afternoon, while the main suspect was caught, CBS News reported, quoting the city’s authorities.
A 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, and two men (aged 49 and 22) were killed, while five others were rushed to hospitals with “serious injuries,” according to a news release from the Rockford Police Department on Wednesday evening.
Police and the US Postal Inspection Service say a mail carrier was among the casualties.
According to Rockford police spokesperson Michelle Marcomb, five persons were hurt in Rockford and two in Winnebago County. Rockford police Chief Carla Redd stated Wednesday at a press conference that the suspect is in custody and that no additional suspects are at loose.
At 1:14 p.m., police got a 911 call asking for medical assistance, which was followed by further calls for help. Police responded by deploying in residences around Holmes Street, Winnetka Drive, and Cleveland Avenue. The suspect, a 22-year-old man, was apprehended around 1:35 p.m.
Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana stated that county officials received an allegation of a home invasion and a young woman fleeing the scene at about 1 p.m.
Caruana said a good Samaritan who stopped to help the woman was also stabbed. “He is fine.” “He is being checked out,” she stated.
Police advised neighbors to check their security cameras for any footage of the incident, and to report any information to police or anonymously via Rockford Area Crime Stoppers.
