The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Morocco went down by 0.3% in February compared to January, reflecting slight decreases in the food and non-food indexes by 0.7% and 0.1%, respectively, according to Morocco’s Statistics and Forecasts Office HCP’s published on Thursday.
Although overall inflation rose 0.2% month-on-month and 2.2% year-on-year, the price of food decreased from January to February, driven mainly by “Vegetables” decreasing by a significant 9.5%, and “Fish” declining by 2.1%.
By contrast, fruit prices rose by 3.9%, “meat” rose 1.1%, “Bread and cereals” were up a tiny 0.3%, and prices of “Milk, cheese and eggs” increased by 0.2%. Non-food product prices fell mostly due to an increase of 1.0% in “Fuels” prices.
The largest decreases in the CPI were recorded in Al-Hoceima where prices declined 0.8%, Beni Mellal was down 0.7%, Errachidia 0.7%, Safi 0.4%. Casablanca, Fez, Kenitra, Marrakech, Rabat, and Dakhla all decreased 0.3%, and Agadir declined 0.2%. In contrast, prices in Guelmim and Settat recorded a slight rise of 0.2%.
