Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) will participate as a Bronze Sponsor at the upcoming Invest in African Energy (IAE) 2024 forum scheduled for May 14-15 in Paris, France.
Amina Benkhadra, the Managing Director, will address the audience on Morocco’s recent advancements in gas exploration and production, midstream infrastructure, and green hydrogen initiatives.
“ONHYM has been actively promoting the potential of the country’s onshore and offshore sedimentary basins, attracting interest from leading independent explorers. Upstream, the country’s flagship Anchois gas development project – operated by Chariot Oil & Gas – is approaching start-up and targets 18 billion cubic meters of gas reserves,” the IAE website said.
Last September, British firm SDX Energy unveiled the discovery of a gas reservoir in the El Gharb basin, indicating promising prospects beyond Morocco’s established basins such as Essaouira, Tendrara, Larache, and Rharb. Predator Oil & Gas Holdings initiated drilling at the MOU-4 well affiliated with the onshore Guercif license in July, targeting both shallow and deepwater gas potential.
The two-day forum is tailored to foster investment collaboration between African energy markets and global investors, providing attendees with extensive interactions with industry specialists, project developers, investors, and policymakers.
Morocco is leading the way in diversified energy development to ensure energy security and diminish costly imports. Projects like Anchois and Sound Energy’s Tendrara conventional gas development aim to achieve an annual gas production of 400 million cubic meters, covering 40% of domestic gas consumption.
It also highlighted Morocco’s plans for the 5,600-km Nigeria-Morocco pipeline–anticipated to receive a final investment decision (FID) in 2024–which will transport Nigerian gas through 13 countries to Moroccan consumers. Morocco has also earmarked one million hectares for green hydrogen projects to attract investments and expedite hydrogen advancements, leveraging its abundant solar and wind resources.
