Morocco ranks among the countries in the world that have not been affected by terrorism in the last five years, according to the 2024 Global Terrorism Index (GTI).
Issued by The Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), the report measures the impact of terrorism on countries using data from Dragonfly TerrorismTracker database and other sources. The GTI score considers not only deaths but also incidents of terrorism, hostage-taking, and injuries resulting from terrorist attacks weighted over five years.
In the 2024 ranking, Morocco came in at 89 compared to 83 last year, the lower score reflecting less impact from terrorism than the year before.
In contrast, Burkina Faso now ranks the most impacted country by terrorism, scoring 8.571, up from being the second most impacted in 2023. Israel follows in second place (8.143), followed by Mali (7.998), and then Pakistan (7.916).
Burkina Faso saw the highest number of deaths from terrorism for the second year in a row, recording 1,907 terrorism-related deaths in 2023.
In the Arab world, Syria remains the most affected country by terrorism with 7.890 points, followed by Iraq with 7.078 points.
The Sahel region recorded just under four thousand deaths from terrorism, a staggering 47% of the total worldwide, with 26% of all attacks occurring in the region in 2023.
Terrorism-related deaths rose by 22% to 8,352 fatalities, reaching the highest level since 2017. However, the total number of terrorist attacks decreased by 22% to 3,350, marking the lowest number of incidents recorded since 2009.
