Xlinks, the firm behind the Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project, is looking to expand its subsea cable to Germany in addition to the UK. This approach might be a means to obtain government backing, which is critical to the project’s success, said Bloomberg on Monday.
The company is looking into the possibility of extending the cable to Germany as well. “We’re looking at options,” said CEO Simon Morrish. “Everything is a possibility.”
A spokeswoman for Xlinks later emphasized that the firm is “100% focused on the UK market,” implying that the Germany link, if approved, will be added to the UK route.
The Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project proposes to transfer solar power from Morocco to the United Kingdom. While still in progress, it has received substantial investment from large corporations.
However, one key component remains unknown: the level of government backing. Xlinks believes that the Germany option will apply pressure on the English government to back the project.
Xlinks needs significant funding to bring this unique concept to fulfillment, and they’ve apparently begun negotiations with governmental entities to obtain such assistance. Notably, the UK has classified the Xlinks cable as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, implying potential government involvement.
