With the kingdom’s museum offerings expected to expand as the country invests in new cultural infrastructure, construction of a new museum complex at the old Royal Navy headquarters in Rabat will begin soon, local media reported on Monday.
The new complex, to be situated in the heart of the Kingdom’s capital, will feature an underground gallery with connections to the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMVI), the Museum of Rabat, and the Museum of the African Continent. It will also house a training and conservation center for museography heritage, workshops, storerooms, and the administrative offices of Morocco’s National Museums Foundation (FNM).
The construction tender for the complex was launched by FNM in June 2023. Moroccan architect Karim Chakor is responsible for design of the project, while Moroccan company Jet Contractors will be in charge of building the complex at an estimated cost of 88 million MAD.
Established in 1992, Jet Contractors specializes in turnkey construction solutions covering a variety of areas, including building interiors, major construction endeavors, and renewable energy projects in Morocco. The firm has an international presence, having completed successful projects in France and West Africa.
