Morocco became Spain’s number one export destination for natural gas in January, with volumes transported via the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline surpassing those to all European countries, Spanish outlet “La Opinión de Málaga” reported on Saturday.
During the month of January, the gas pipeline that passes through Tarifa and the Strait of Gibraltar transported 868 gigawatt hours (GWh) equivalent of natural gas from Spanish plants to Morocco, accounting for more than 28% of all exports that month and becoming the primary destination for gas resale due to decreases in shipments to France, Portugal, and Italy, which are typically ranked first among receiving countries.
Last year, natural gas re-exports from Spain to Morocco exceeded 9,800 GWh, making the Alawite kingdom the second largest destination for gas shipments from Spain, behind France.
