Morocco has maintained a four-year trend of rising fruit and vegetable exports to Canada, according to Thursday’s report from the agricultural data analytics platform “EastFruit.”
The annual growth rate from 2018 to 2023 reached 14% in tons and 33% in value, as measured in U.S. dollars.
In 2023, Moroccan exporters shipped nearly 94,000 tons of fresh, frozen, and dried products to Canada, amounting to $95 million.
Mandarins topped Moroccan exports to Canada, accounting for 83% of the total weight, followed by oranges at 12%. The remainder of the supply contained frozen fruits and vegetables, and fresh blueberries, lemons, grapefruits, along with other assorted goods.
The spike in mandarin shipments contributed significantly to overall export growth, increasing by 29% on its way to 78,000 tons.
In contrast, sales of frozen strawberries and oranges fell by 5,100 tons and 11,000 tons, respectively.
Despite an increase in Moroccan blueberry deliveries in 2023, its impact on the final Moroccan export tally remained limited.
Morocco is the largest supplier of mandarins to Canada, accounting for almost one-third of total imports. Moroccan exports ranked fourth in the citrus segment; however, its share of the market only constituted about 7%.
Incidentally, Morocco ranked fifth in the supply of frozen strawberries to Canada.
