Renowned Moroccan singer Abdou Cherif took his last breath on Friday at a private clinic in Casablanca, following a massive heart attack earlier in the day, succumbing to this crisis after battling successive health issues recently. He was 52.
Cherif, who launched his professional career in 1992, was scheduled to perform today at Casablanca’s Megarama theater complex to commemorate International Women’s Day. After years of absence, the artist left without waving a final goodbye to his admirers.
Cherif, hailing from a long line of musicians and composers, extended his musical skills beyond Morocco, winning over audiences around the world with his interpretations of Arabic music classics. He was renowned for his tributes to legends such as Abdelhalim Hafez and Oum Kalthoum, and was given the nickname “modern nightingale.”
