Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid unveiled 50 new movie theatres in Tamesna in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region on Wednesday, as part of the ministry’s 150 cinemas initiative.
The project is intended to enrich cultural offerings all across Morocco, with a particular focus on smaller cities, according to the Minister, who asserted that access to the cinema is a “fundamental cultural right for all Moroccan citizens.”
Bensaid highlighted the integration of communication and culture as a new cultural offering within cultural institutions, underscoring the importance of promoting cinematic works that have previously been absent to cultivate a cinematic artistic culture and facilitate interactions between young individuals and Moroccan directors and actors through films.
He added that the initiative will drive positive economic momentum in the cinema industry, recognizing the public’s strong desire for historical films featuring Moroccan leads, a venture that necessitates significant resources. Supporting the film industry will foster an economic environment that enables producers and directors to generate additional income.
The Minister also underscored in his opening speech the significance of enhancing and revitalizing cultural spaces in all Moroccan cities. In collaboration with civil society organizations, this will ensure the ongoing development of cultural programs and projects that resonate with the cultural aspirations of the people, facilitating broad audience engagement, particularly among young people.
