Head of the UN General Assembly, Dennis Francis, appointed Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Omar Hilale, to co-facilitate the 2025 UN preparatory process regarding the modalities and the political declaration of the World Social Summit entitled, “Second World Summit for Social Development.” Belgium’s ambassador to the UN will share the chairing duties with Hilale.
This appointment recognizes Morocco’s ongoing commitment to social justice and sustainable development, as evidenced by initiatives such as the Royal Project for the Generalization of Social Protection.
Hilale also co-chaired the initial UN negotiation process for the political declaration on “Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response,” endorsed by Heads of State and Government during the high-level General Assembly meeting in New York last September.
His appointment follows the UN General Assembly resolution of February 27, 2024, which resolved to convene the “Second World Summit for Social Development” in 2025 to address gaps and reaffirm the international community’s commitment to the principles outlined in the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development, and to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This monumental endeavor will involve transparent and inclusive consultations with all UN member states, social partners, and civil society.
Morocco and Belgium will lead the development and facilitation of the pivotal political declaration to be adopted by Heads of State and Government during the high-level week of the General Assembly in 2025.
The 2025 Social Summit will take place 30 years after the historic first World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen, during which heads of state and government defined an ambitious common vision for social development focusing on social justice, solidarity, harmony, and equality within and among nations.
