Morocco’s national football team coach Walid Regragui on Saturday slated 24-year-old Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Diaz for the pre-selection list to join Morocco’s national team, even as Spain continues to covet him. Diaz now has a tough decision to make.
On March 23, the Atlas Lions play a friendly against Angola, and then against Mauritania on March 26. Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente is set to call up him to face Colombia on March 22 and Brazil on March 26 in a friendly.
Although Diaz already made his debut appearance for Spain in June 2021 against Lithuania, the offensive midfielder now has the opportunity to play for Morocco, the kingdom of his grandparents.
Diaz has played 31 games for Real Madrid this season, scoring 8 goals and assisting 4 times. The Malaga native scored a vital and magnificent goal for Merengue against Leipzig in the Champions League round of 16 first leg.
Like Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, Diaz started his career at Real Madrid. But Hakimi later chose to play with the Atlas Lions at the 2018 World Cup held in Russia. Meanwhile, Moroccan player Lamine Yamal, Diaz’s rival at Barcelona, chose to play with Spanish team La Roja in August last year.
So what side will Diaz choose? Whether he wears the Moroccan colors may well be a choice of the heart.
