Youssef Balla, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Agencies in Rome, has been unanimously elected President of the Executive Board of the World Food Programme (WFP) for the year 2024. The election took place on Monday during the first regular session of the board, which is being held from February 26 to 28 at the WFP headquarters in Rome, Italy.
Established in November 1961, the WFP is an international humanitarian organization, that provides food assistance in emergencies and works with communities to improve nutrition and resilience, end hunger, and achieve food security. It also works on implementing long-term development programs for nations impacted by climate change.
Morocco has been a member of the Board since December 2020, previously serving as Vice President before being appointed as the Board’s coordinator for African countries.
