“Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s visit to Morocco this week reflects the sort of robust bilateral cooperation that will lead to tangible results for the two countries and beyond”, said Ilan Berman, Vice President of the American Foreign Policy Council based in Washington.
“The recent trend in relations between Rabat and Madrid is clearly moving towards greater cooperation,” Berman told news agency MAP. He noted the positive outcome already of the multidimensional strategic partnership between the two countries which is serving as a model of “good neighborliness.”
Highlighting the significance of the recent phase in bilateral relations initiated after King Mohammed VI and the Spanish Prime Minister met in April 2022 during which they signed a Joint Declaration, the American expert pointed out Spain’s endorsement of Morocco’s 2007 autonomy plan to resolve the Sahara issue.
“Pedro Sanchez has made improving ties with Morocco a top priority, and the results are evident,” noted Berman. He underscored the beneficial impacts of the two countries enhanced partnership focusing on regional stability and prosperity.
The Vice President added that Madrid comprehends the significance of the African continent with respect to its economic, political, and humanitarian aspects, while Morocco has demonstrated leadership in regional politics.
King Mohammed VI met with Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday at the Royal Palace in Rabat, where he affirmed Spain’s interest in Morocco’s strategic initiatives, including the Initiative of Atlantic coastal African countries, the Royal Initiative to facilitate access for Sahel nations to the Atlantic Ocean, and the Nigeria-Morocco Atlantic-African Gas Pipeline.
