The African Football Confederation (CAF) gave the green light to the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) to start the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) during the summer, more precisely in July and August, according to the AFP.
“This agreement was reached under the aegis of the International Federation (FIFA) after talks that began several months ago and intensified during the last edition, which was concluded this month in Côte d’Ivoire,” an official of the committee in charge of competitions told AFP on the condition of anonymity. “The dates currently proposed are from July 20 to August 16 or 17, 2025.”
CAF President Patrice Motsepele refused to give a precise date for the AFCON 35th edition as of the beginning of February. The competition was initially scheduled to be held next year in Morocco–in January and February–but it was postponed indefinitely.
The 2021 AFCON was played in January and February of 2022 in Cameroon, while the 2023 AFCON commenced January 13 of this year in Côte d’Ivoire, with the host country capturing the trophy on February 11.
Amid the celebrations in the AFCON final, FRMF President of Fouzi Lekjaa received the official AFCON flag from Cote D’Ivoire’s President Alassane Ouattara.
