The Spanish Foreign Affairs Ministry cautioned its citizens against traveling to the Tindouf camps (in Algeria), citing concerns over “terrorist threats against Spanish citizens in the area of the Sahrawi camps.”
The Foreign Affairs Ministry, as reported by Spanish newspaper Elindependiente on Saturday, said that the growing instability in the north of Mali and the consequent increase in the activity of terrorist groups in the region affect the security situation in the area where the Sahrawi camps of Tindouf are located.
“For all these reasons, it is recommended not to travel to the area,” the ministry stated, urging “all Spanish travelers whose presence is not essential to leave as soon as possible.”
In a swift response to the Spanish decision, the same news outlet quoted polisario’s representative to Spain Abdulah Arabi as terming the decision “reprehensible and inopportune,” and an attempt to torpedo their “cause.”
