Judicial Police in Settat, 89 km from Casablanca, foiled an attempt to smuggle three tons and 826 kilograms of cannabis (locally known as Chira) yesterday. A 30-year-old suspect, believed to be linked to a drug and psychotropic substance trafficking network, was apprehended, reported a press release of National Police (DGSN).
According to the statement, the arrest took place on a farm in the small town of Sidi El Mekki on the outskirts of Berrechid (Casablanca region).
Subsequent investigations revealed a hidden drug shipment inside a utility vehicle carrying 103 bundles of cannabis, weighing three tons and 826 kilograms, and bearing forged license plates.
The DGSN added that the inspection procedures resulted in the seizure of quantities of cocaine, a second utility vehicle, and forged vehicle license plates in Berrechid.
The suspect’s profile, when cross-referenced with the DGSN database, indicated that he is wanted by the judicial police and the Royal Gendarmerie in Oujda, Khouribga, Beni Mellal, and Tetouan for alleged involvement in other drug trafficking rings and attempted intentional homicide cases.
The judicial police are continuing their investigation under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office, which is looking at other individuals who may also be connected to these criminal activities, with an eye on regional and global links.
