A dispute between two rival gangs precipitated a shooting on Monday inside a Bronx subway station, killing one person and injuring five others, including two adolescent gang members as well as several bystanders, reported US media.
According to New York Police Department Chief Detective Joseph Kenny, gunfire erupted when a northbound No. 4 train arrived at the Mt. Eden subway station just after 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
On the train were two groups of adolescents: one that had boarded the train around 125th Street and another that had gotten on near Yankee Stadium, Kenny told reporters at a press conference, when a fight erupted.
Kenny said police received a number of 911 calls as the incident was unfolding. Police arrived shortly thereafter after and discovered three victims lying on the platform and two on the road outside the station. A fifth victim had managed to walk to the nearest hospital.
A 35-year-old man who died had been shot in the chest, according to Kenny. Police had previously said that he was 34. The man was from Tehuacan, Mexico.
Officials are assisting his family, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alicia Barcena later tweeted on X.
Police are currently looking for three shooters and have identified a person of interest associated with one of the gangs, according to the police chief.
Authorities stated that they will release security camera footage as soon as it becomes available. Detectives are questioning witnesses to the shooting, they said.
