Customs and police authorities at Tanger Med Port confiscated over 3.2 tons of cannabis resin (locally known as Chira) on Sunday from an international freight transport vehicle loaded with fish, heading to Europe, and arrested the driver, who is of Moroccan nationality, according to a press release issued by the National Police (DGSN).
Preliminary investigations by judicial police at the port allege that the 32-year-old truck driver was caught red-handed in an attempt to smuggle the illegal substance as he was about to leave the country on his way to a European port. The trafficker was apprehended and taken into custody.
The authorities said they discovered the concealed narcotics in the form of parcels, carefully hidden inside the truck’s interior partition between the cargo area and cab.
The judicial police are continuing their investigation under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office which is looking at other individuals who may also be connected to these criminal activities, with an eye on regional and global links.
