Morocco’s National police (DGSN) and customs officers at the Guerguerat border-crossing with Mauritania, south of the city of Dakhla, foiled an international drug smuggling operation on Thursday and seized 47.4 kilograms of cocaine headed to Morocco from abroad.
According to a security source, vigilant border surveillance and meticulous inspection led to the discovery of the concealed narcotics, comprising 40 packages carefully hidden within the refrigeration system of an international cargo truck bearing a Moroccan license plate.
The truck arrived at the Guerguerat border crossing from a sub-Saharan African country.
The driver of the truck, a 40-year-old Moroccan man, was apprehended during the smuggling attempt.
The suspect was remanded into police custody pending further investigation, under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office. Efforts are underway to apprehend all individuals involved in the smuggling operation.
