In a special 50th edition of the Police Magazine, Morocco’s National Police (DGSN) reported on its response to Morocco’s devastating September 8 earthquake, highlighting the DGSN’s efforts, led by Director Abdellatif Hammouchi, to mobilize resources to assist disaster victims. The special edition also focused on the DGSN’s humanitarian role in handling the aftermath of the earthquake.
Entitled “The DGSN in the Face of the Earthquake: from Duty to Solidarity,” the magazine underlined King Mohammed VI’s leadership and the country’s collective mobilization, by both state and non-state entities, to successfully handle the disaster whose epicenter struck the province of Al Haouz and was felt in other neighboring regions as far away as Casablanca and Rabat on September 8, 2023.
According to the report, under Abdellatif Hammouchi’s command, despite “exhaustion and pressure,” the DGSN cooperated with a variety of stakeholders, including the Royal Armed Forces, Royal Gendarmerie, local authorities, Civil Protection, and Auxiliary Forces, on rescue operations.
The report highlighted the police force’s expanded responsibilities, such as actively engaging in a large-scale blood drive and deploying mobile bakeries to distribute bread to the affected populations. It also touted the police force’s “sense of citizenship, sacrifice, and solidarity,” praising officers for their “dedication to the well-being and peace of their fellow residents.”
One of the magazine’s sections focused on the DGSN’s digital alertness during emergencies, combatting misinformation and “fake news” to ensure a timely response using digital intelligence.
The 47th Arab Police and Security Leaders Conference in Tangier, a high-level meeting to enhance cooperation among Arab countries and international organizations, at which DGSN represented Morocco, featured in the “Events” section.
Finally, the DGSN donated 50 million MAD to Bank Al-Maghrib’s (BAM) Special Fund No. 126 created to receive donations for disaster relief to victims of the earthquake.
