Morocco’s National Police (DGSN) officers apprehended a French citizen of Algerian origin, in Marrakech on Thursday, after noticing that Interpol had flagged the man based on an arrest warrant issued by French judicial authorities, a security source stated.
The DGSN checked the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) database and identified the 37-year-old suspect as the subject of a “red notice” issued at the behest of Interpol’s national central office in Paris. The warrant was issued for the enforcement of a prison sentence rendered by the French judiciary.
The wanted foreigner allegedly belongs to a criminal network that committed a robbery back in 2018 and stole three valuable paintings, including one by a famed French painter.
The suspect was remanded into police custody pending further investigation, under the supervision of the public prosecution.
The Rabat Interpol Bureau will notify the French authorities of the suspect’s arrest before initiating extradition procedures.
