Morocco took the lead of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) at the African Union (AU) for one mandate on Thursday, and presided over this important decision-making body responsible for promoting peace, security, and stability on the African continent for the 3rd time since 2017, according to a release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
After having presided over this body in September 2019 and in October, 2022, this third presidency–which covers the month of February, 2024–is in line with the Kingdom of Morocco’s consistent efforts in favor of peace, security and development in Africa.
The Kingdom’s contribution to joint African action is guided by the Royal Vision of King Mohammed VI–which emphasizes Africa’s most noble causes and the vital interests of African citizens in terms of peace, security and development–as the crux of the pan-African agenda.
Morocco’s ascension to the presidency of the PSC is an extension of its commitment to addressing the various security challenges facing the African continent, with a new global and multidimensional approach based on the Peace, Security and Development interconnections.
The Moroccan presidency of the Council–which coincides in February with the 37th AU Summit of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa–includes in its monthly program a PSC ministerial meeting on “Connectivity: The Path to Strengthening Peace, Security and Integration in Africa.”
The monthly program of the Moroccan presidency also includes a series of meetings involving permanent representatives who deliberate on issues of high priority for Africa in which the Kingdom holds proven expertise.
These include issues relating to the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, health security and its relationship with peace and security, transitional justice and post-conflict peacebuilding, preventing and combating the use of child trafficking, and a follow-up to the Tangier Conference on the Peace, Security and Development Nexus.
