Morocco Condemns Terrorist Attack on Military Outpost near Jordan-Syria-Iraq Border

Morocco condemned a terrorist attack carried out by an Iran-backed militia group on a Jordanian military post known as Tower 22 located in northeast Jordan near the borders with Iraq and Syria over the weekend, that killed three American soldiers and injured dozens more personnel.

Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister, Nasser Bourita, denounced the attack yesterday during discussions with US Under Secretary of State, Bonnie Jenkins, in Rabat, expressing the kingdom’s sincere condolences for the loss of life and injuries.

The attack using an unmanned aerial device unfolded on Sunday at the Jordanian Defense Network’s logistics support base at Tower 22, which houses a small US logistics outpost, injuring more than 40 service personnel and killing three US servicemen.

The three dead Americans, Sgt. William Jerome Rivers, Kennedy Ladon Sanders, and Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, had been supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, a mission to defeat ISIS. Sanders and Moffett were posthumously promoted to sergeant.

Speculation is that US troops may have confused a hostile drone for an American one and allowed it to enter a desert base under the radar.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for the drone strike, saying it was in response to the US’s support of Israel’s war on Gaza, fueling fears that Israel’s war is spilling over into regional conflict.

The strike also raises questions about potential misidentification. US officials are investigating whether an enemy drone, possibly mistaken for an American one, approached the military outpost, and they are assessing its point of origin.
