Tanger Med Port Complex handled over 8.6 million containers in 2023, reaching 95% of its capacity, according to a statement from the Tanger Med Port Authority. The port processed 8,617,410 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), a 13.4% increase from the previous year and four years ahead of schedule.
The remarkable performance was credited to Maersk-APM’s successful operations of terminals TC1 and TC4, as well as Tanger Alliance’s ongoing growth of terminal TC3 (a joint venture held by Marsa Maroc 50%, Eurogate 40%, and Hapag Lloyd 10%).
The year 2023 additionally witnessed record production levels, with monthly peaks of 800,000 TEUs processed.
In terms of roll-on/roll-off traffic, the port handled 477,993 International Transport of Goods Trucks in 2023, a 4.1% increase over 2023.
The statement highlighted an impressive 14.3% increase in industrial product traffic, which offset a 7.7% fall in agricultural product traffic.
Furthermore, the port’s two vehicle terminals handled a total of 578,446 vehicles in 2023, up 21% from 2022.
The TMPA highlighted that this traffic consisted mostly of 341,758 automobiles for export built by Renault amenities at Melloussa (Tangier) and SOMACA in Casablanca, as well as 176,208 vehicles shipped by the Stellantis facility in Kenitra.
Liquid bulk traffic experienced a 6% growth in 2023, reaching a total of 9,838,157 tons of handled hydrocarbons. As for the Solid bulk traffic, it witnessed a remarkable 44% increase compared to the previous year, totaling 581,042 tons.
Passenger traffic saw a surge, with 2,700,747 passengers welcomed at Tanger Med Port in 2023, a 30% increase from 2022, in a return to pre-COVID-19 levels.
In 2023, Tanger Med Port Complex handled 122 million tons of goods, marking a 13.6% increase from 2022, with 21% attributed to Import/Export. This overall traffic is the highest in the Strait of Gibraltar and across the Mediterranean, representing more than half of Morocco’s total port tonnage.
In the context of maritime traffic, the port docked 16,900 vessels in 2023, a 17% increase from 2022, including 1,113 mega-ships (larger than 290 meters), which increased by 16% over the previous year.
