The Peruvian Navy’s “B.A.P. Unión” anchored in Tangier City Port, reaching a significant step in its bicentennial circumnavigation mission. The trip coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Morocco and the Republic of Peru, as Peru commemorates its bicentennial independence anniversary.
The docking of the Peruvian vessel in Tangier demonstrates Peru’s willingness to improve bilateral relations with Morocco. The Moroccan public will learn about Peru’s history, culture, food, and diversity during visits scheduled for January 27, 28, and 29.
Before mooring at Tangier Bay, the ship waved the Peruvian flag and launched ceremonial gun salutes to signal its arrival. As the ship docked, the Royal Navy choir sang the Peruvian national anthem after singing the Moroccan national anthem.
Arturo Chipoco Càceda, Peruvian Ambassador to Morocco, highlighted the significance of the Peruvian ship’s first visit, which provided an opportunity for the crew to visit Morocco, with special emphasis on Tangier.
The vessel features the “House of Peru,” an onboard museum illustrating Peruvian history and culture that Moroccans may explore. Ambassador Chipoco stated his desire for cultural exchange between the two populations.
Captain José Luis Arce Corzo described the vessel as a mobile embassy designed to strengthen diplomatic, political, and cultural ties. Beyond its cultural goal, the 220-day tour via 15 ports on five continents trains future Peruvian naval officers and fosters worldwide friendships.
At 115.5 meters in length, the B.A.P Unión is a four-masted training ship with a sailing speed of 5.5 knots and a motor speed of 12 knots, making it the largest and fastest sailing training ship built in Latin America and the second largest in the world.
