A prisoner identified as R.C. committed suicide by hanging himself inside his cell with his bed sheets at Aïn Sbaâ 1 prison in Casablanca, Morocco’s Prison Administration (DGAPR) stated in a release on Wednesday.
The man’s wife has requested an investigation into her husband’s death due to several marks having been found on his body.
The DGAPR asserted that the marks had been observed on the prisoner’s body upon his arrival at the facility and were documented in his processing file. They consisted of a skin condition on his right hand and a hematoma on the left side of his face.
The DGAPR stated that as soon as the prison administration became aware of the suicide, it informed the relevant judicial authorities, met with the deceased’s mother, and informed her of the incident, offering her condolences.
The detainee allegedly had serious mental disorders that had resulted in violent and aggressive behavior, both against himself and against prison officials and members of his family, necessitating psychological evaluation once he had been placed in detention, according to the DGAPR. He had already received mental health treatment at Ibn Rochd (Averroes) hospital, including prescription for appropriate medication.
