Morocco’s U20 women’s football team qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2024, for the first time in their history, despite a 0-1 loss on Sunday at the Abebe Bikila stadium in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Moroccan team snatched qualification thanks to the 2-0 victory in the first leg at El Abdi stadium in El Jadida against Ethiopia, which ended up being the deciding factor.
The World Cup will run from August 31 to September 22 in Colombia.
This historic achievement by the U20 women’s national team confirms once again that women’s soccer in Morocco is enjoying a remarkable upswing, with some brilliant performances on the continental and international scene. These instances included the participation of the Atlas Lionesses in the 2023 World Cup and their final at the CAN-2022, the victory of the AS FAR women’s team in the African Champions League, and the participation of the U17 women’s team in the World Cup in India.
The current momentum in Moroccan women’s soccer is by no means the result of chance, but of long-term efforts and concrete actions implemented by the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), in line with the far-reaching vision of King Mohammed VI.
Following the recent successes of women’s national soccer, Morocco–which is preparing to host the Women’s CAN this year for the 2nd consecutive time–has high ambitions for this discipline by continuing to excel in various continental and international competitions.
