Heads of State and Government, who have attended the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Kampala (Uganda) on January 19-20, expressed their support for the UN political process to resolve the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara and find a “mutually acceptable political solution” to it.
The Final Declaration emphasized the significance and relevance of the UN Security Council resolutions adopted since 2007, including resolution 2703, which was adopted on October 30, 2023, and confirmed that the final political solution can only be “realistic, pragmatic, durable, and compromise-based.”
The resolution, which established the roundtable meetings as the exclusive framework for the UN political process, clearly named the parties involved and urged them to remain engaged until its conclusion.
All Security Council resolutions adopted since 2007, as well as the Final Declaration of the Kampala Summit, underline the importance of the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as a serious and credible foundation for the political process.
The Final Declaration urged all parties to collaborate fully with the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for the Sahara, while acknowledging their continuous commitment to the political process under UN auspices.
During the same event, NAM lauded King Mohammed VI’s prominent role as chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, an offshoot of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, in the protection of Palestinians’ rights and in favor of the establishment of a sovereign, independent, and viable Palestinian state with East Al-Quds as capital.
The Movement also praised the role by the Bait Mal Al Quds Al Sharif Agency in preserving the Holy City’s legal status and identity, and protecting its places of worship.
