Sixteen people lost their lives and 2,469 others were injured last week, with 74 sustaining severe injuries, in a total of 1,782 traffic accidents in urban areas.
The National Police (DGSN) reported that law enforcement authorities recorded 50,224 violations, completed 9,144 reports forwarded to the public prosecutor, and collected 41,080 traffic settlement fines.
Monitoring and enforcement operations in the field of traffic and patrols resulted in the collection of fines amounting to 9,015,175 MAD.
Vehicles which were impounded totaled 4,458, while 9,144 documents were withdrawn, and 420 vehicles were detained during the week.
The DGSN attributed the road accidents to driver inattention, failure to yield, excessive speed, pedestrian inadvertence, failure to maintain a safe distance, failure to maintain vehicular control, changing direction without signaling, unauthorized direction changes, failure to respect “stop” signs, disregarding red traffic signals, driving on the left side of the road, driving under the influence, dangerous overtaking, and driving in prohibited directions.
