The United States congratulated Morocco on Wednesday for its historic election to the Presidency of the UN Human Rights Council for 2024, demonstrating the strong historical ties between the two nations and their common interest in respecting human rights.
Michèle Taylor, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, tweeted her congratulations to Morocco’s Ambassador Omar Zniber on his election as President of the UN Human Rights Council.
In her message, Taylor emphasized the US’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Morocco in promoting human rights globally.
“We are excited to partner in our mutual endeavor to strengthen Human Rights worldwide,” she wrote. “United, we can forge a path towards universal respect and equality.”
Morocco’s election to preside over the UN Human Rights Council for the first time in its history is a watershed achievement.
Ambassador Zniber received 30 votes in favor out of 47, demonstrating the international community’s recognition of Morocco’s commitment to safeguarding and developing human rights.
The election is consistent with Morocco’s 2011 constitutional revisions, proving the country’s commitment to the supremacy of law and human rights under King Mohammed VI’s leadership.
As Morocco assumes leadership of the council, the global community can anticipate continuing efforts by Morocco at promoting interfaith dialogue and tolerance, combatting racial hatred, promoting environmental sustainability, safeguarding migrants’ rights, and managing emerging technologies.
