A 30-year-old man died from injuries sustained while the police were trying to arrest him using an electric stun gun in Montfermeil, France. The man was admitted to the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital after receiving approximately ten electric shock discharges from the taser but did not make it, according to French media.
The tragic story goes back to an emergency call made by a vendor to report an aggressive individual causing disruption. 18 police officers answered the call and came to the scene in Montfermeil to face an “aggressive” and “overexcited” man. Six officers used electric stun guns repeatedly to subdue him.
At the hospital, the man suffered two heart arrests before slipping into a coma.
The General Inspection of National Police (IGPN) started investigating the unfortunate intervention to see if there is proof of police violence or disproportionate use of force.
The Seine-Saint-Denis National Police are also looking into charges of violence against the same police officers.
The incident raises concerns about the safety and repetitive use of electric stun guns during arrests or law enforcement operations.
