Moroccan National Police units from BNPJ and DGSN security operations at the Tanger-Med Port thwarted a significant international drug trafficking operation and successfully seized a total of one ton, 488 kilograms, and 80 grams of cocaine, on Tuesday, according to data issued by the DGSN.
The operation was carried out in collaboration with Spanish security services as part of their joint operational effort to fight international cocaine smuggling and mitigate the risks posed by transnational organized crime networks, according to the statement.
Traffickers had attempted to conceal the drugs inside 1,277 packages aboard a marine cargo vessel flying the flag of a European country, which had departed from a South American port and was next headed for a Turkish port, according to the source.
Judicial Police are conducting an investigation at the direction of the public prosecutor into persons involved in the criminal network and the attempted smuggling of the cocaine cargo, with a focus on regional and international connections.
