A joint security operation involving national police and customs at Morocco’s El Guergarat border post south of Dakhla thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large international shipment of hard drugs into Morocco on Monday, resulting in the seizure of 362.95 kg of cocaine destined for Morocco from abroad, according to a security source.
Officers discovered the large cargo of drugs in the form of 16 bales carefully concealed in the cabin and body of an international goods transport truck registered in Morocco, immediately after it had arrived at the El Guergarat border crossing from a sub-Saharan African country.
The truck driver and his assistant, both of Moroccan nationality and aged 40-41, were arrested and taken into custody pending further investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which is looking at the local and international ramifications of the cross-border criminal operation.
The joint security operation is part of the intensive efforts made by the various security services at the El Guerguerat border to combat international drug trafficking and transnational crime.
