A seismic tremor with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale struck the Azilal region in Beni Mellal province in central Morocco at 8:37 am this morning, the Director of the National Institute of Geophysics (ING) Nasser Jebbour announced.
While the epicenter was pinpointed at a depth of 13 kilometers in the town of Ait M’hamed, residents in various neighboring and other cities as far as Casablanca reported feeling the tremor.
No casualties have been reported so far, and provincial expert teams and local officials are assessing the situation and any structural damage.
On September 8, Morocco’s south central region experienced a devastating earthquake with its epicenter in Al Houz that resulted in a significant number of casualties, nearly 3000 deaths, and widespread destruction of people’s homes.
