Head of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority Abdellatif Berdache announced during his presentation to the Infrastructure Commission at the Lower House on Wednesday that Morocco intends to establish a project for the exchange of electric energy in several West African countries.
Berdache stated that the authority has the capacity to develop this project to connect Morocco to the electric energy grid in West Africa, and had already completed several studies to examine the possibility of an electricity network between Morocco and Mauritania. The broader goal is to connect the countries of the Maghreb and West Africa at both an economic and technical level.
However, no financial or technical details were provided regarding the cost of building this network between West African countries, nor was an implementation date mentioned.
Last Saturday, ministers from Sahel African countries agreed in Marrakech to establish a national working group in each country to brainstorm methods by which to break ground for King Mohammed VI’s highly touted international energy initiative.
In June, 2023, the Moroccan government announced that it would triple its investments in renewable energy, reaching $1.4 billion annually between 2023 and 2027.
