The L’Oréal Foundation, in collaboration with UNESCO, recently awarded the distinctive “For Women in Science” prize to five remarkable women researchers from the Maghreb region.
Conferred during the 10th Maghreb region edition as part of the 17th annual For Women in Science awards, the prize recognizes not only the accomplishments of the recipients, but also the urgent need for better gender inclusion in global scientific activities and the significant obstacles that women must overcome during their scientific pursuits.
Representing a remarkable depth of talent and innovation that women bring to the scientific community, the Moroccan recipients included Nisrine Nouj for her ecological wastewater treatment method, Fatima-Zahra Azar for her innovative extraction of essential oils, and Hanane Yaagoubi for advancements in additive manufacturing processes.
Joining them were Meroua Safa Mechouche from Algeria, awarded for her work on the biosynthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles, and Wafa Babay from Tunisia, recognized for her contributions to understanding the microbial environment of ovarian cancer.
Together, these five inspirational women from Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, exemplify groundbreaking research through their outstanding contributions to engineering and technology in a variety of fields.
The significance of their accomplishments is heightened by the sobering fact, noted by the organizers, that women make up only “33.3% of researchers worldwide.”
Having been selected by a competent jury of Maghreban researchers led by Professor Benjouad, each of the winners will receive a 10,000€ grant. Aside from the monetary award, this recognition signifies a commitment toward creating an atmosphere in which women’s voices in science are amplified and recognized.
Reflecting on the program’s history, Director of L’Oréal Morocco Laila Benjelloun expressed delight in the 17-year adventure that has seen 85 scholarships awarded. The commitment goes beyond financial assistance, with a focus on encouraging young women to pursue scientific careers.
UNESCO Regional Director for the Maghreb Eric Falt praised the region’s success in promoting scientific education for young women. UNESCO and L’Oréal together aim not only to honor and support today’s scientists, but also to “position them as role models for future generations.”
