Expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, over 10,000 demonstrators marched in Rabat on Sunday. In contrast to previous gatherings, this march remained peaceful, avoiding the anti-Zionist expressions witnessed in past rallies targeting Jews.
Protesters marched down Avenue Mohammed V, the focal point of the capital city, shouting the message “Stop the genocide war in Gaza.” Many of the demonstrators waved banners condemning the destruction of hospitals and the “colonization” of Palestinian territories.
Protesters chanted slogans honoring the “resistance of the Palestinian people” while criticizing the United States support for Israel in its assault against Palestinian civilians.
In particular, Morocco has condemned Israel’s actions and civilian reprisals–especially against women, the elderly, and children–as outrageous violations of international law and humanitarian law. Morocco also criticized the bombing of hospitals and other safe venues.
Morocco, which reestablished relations with Israel in 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords mediated by the United States, remains an advocate of a two-state solution and promotes the significance of peace and the safety of all citizens, regardless of origin.
The Gaza war began on October 7, following an unprecedented attack on Israeli soil by the Hamas movement, which has resulted in 1,140 deaths in Israel, according to authorities.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the Israeli attack operations have resulted in over 20,500 fatalities.
The gathering taking place on Sunday constituted the latest of Morocco’s ongoing demonstrations to show solidarity for the Palestinian cause.
