The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Mali summoned the Ambassador of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria on Thursday to express strong opposition to the Algerian authorities’ recent unfriendly acts, purportedly related to the peace process in Mali, tweeted the Malian Foreign Affairs Ministry on Thursday.
During this meeting, the Minister emphasized concerns about multiple high-level meetings in Algeria, which occurred in relative secrecy and without the involvement of the Malian Authorities. These meetings involved individuals known for their opposition to the Malian Government and certain signatory movements of the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, stemming from the Algiers process. The actions of these individuals, who have sided with groups considered to be terrorists, were seen as potentially detrimental to the relationship between the two countries.
The Minister highlighted that these acts amounted to interference in Mali’s internal affairs and urged the Algerian side to prioritize dialogue with the legitimate Malian Authorities for state-to-state exchanges with Mali’s partners.
The Minister also recalled Mali’s request for Algeria to lead international mediation in the peace process, considering the historical ties between the two countries. Recognizing the necessity of peace and national unity for sustainable development, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the agreement and the fight against terrorism in all forms, thereby aiming to establish security and stability for the benefit of the entire population.
