Algeria finally repatriated Abdelali Mechouer’s corpse after Algerian sea border guards opened fire on four young Moroccans on jet-skis four months ago.
The deadly occurrence cost the lives of two young Moroccans, the corpse of one having washed up on Moroccan shores. One of the young Moroccans who actually lived to tell about it was apprehended by Algerian officials.
Friends and relatives of the victim–as well as personnel of the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie and Auxiliary Forces–attended the reception.
The family’s attorney, Hakim Chergui, said that the transfer took place via the Zouj Bghal land border crossing on Thursday, and that it was the Moroccan consulate in Algeria that paid for the Algerian ambulance and the taxes for the repatriation the body.
The corpse will be transported to judicial authorities for an autopsy, and the circumstances of the burial will be made public at a later point, according to the lawyer.
He also stated that the family was forced to take several measures and overcome numerous obstacles in order to recover their loved one’s remains, particularly with respect to political and administrative roadblocks.
Algerian officials have one of the four young people still detained in one of their jails.
The shooting in Algeria occurred on August 29, when four young people left the Saidia marina for a jet-ski excursion to the “Ras El Ma” region in the province of Nador.
However, on their journey back to Sadia, they became disoriented and unintentionally entered Algerian territorial waters where they were shot.
