The Heritage Committee in the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) approved integrating eight intangible heritage elements on behalf of the Kingdom of Morocco on Monday during its 11th meeting in Rabat.
These include the crafting of jewelry with beads, the weaving of Hayek and Figuig burnous, tanneries, the Mata equestrian art, pottery from Safi, Attalbi, the songs and dance of Aouad d’Ait Baâmrane, and the traditional game of Ssig, according to the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication.
With these new inscriptions, Morocco, which boasts 54 elements of intangible heritage registered on the ICESCO list already, outranks all Islamic countries.
The meeting of the Heritage Committee in the Islamic World also saw the election of a new board to a four-year term, with the presidency awarded to Saudi Arabia, the vice presidency to Jordan, and Senegal as the reporter.
