A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck a poor region of China on Monday, killing at least 127 people and injuring hundreds, reported Reuters.
The quake brought down mud houses in remote villages and damaged or destroyed over 155,000 homes in Gansu.
The epicenter was in Gansu’s Jishishan county, with strong tremors also felt in Qinghai.
Emergency responses have been mobilized, but rescue efforts have been hampered by sub-zero temperatures after a cold snap.
Earthquakes are common in this region, which lies on the northeastern boundary of the tectonically active Qinghai-Tibetan plateau.
The deadliest Chinese quake in recent decades was in 2008, when a magnitude 8.0 tremor struck Sichuan, killing nearly 70,000 people.
