Morocco joined the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA), a worldwide drive to gradually get rid of coal, on Friday, pledging to use renewables to meet more than half of its energy needs over the next seven years, reported Reuters.
The PPCA now has 60 governments working to break free from coal-fired power generation and end their dependency.
The United States, the United Arab Emirates, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, the Dominican Republic, Iceland, Kosovo, Malta, and Norway have all joined the global initiative during their participation in the COP 28 climate summit, according to PPCA.
Morocco will collaborate with the PPCA to develop a plan for slashing coal usage, the PPCA said, without providing a timeline.
According to official data, coal accounts for approximately 70% of Moroccan electricity generation, with renewable energy accounting for 20% so far this year.
Morocco intends to increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to over 52% by 2030.
