Morocco is among a dozen countries that are to build “peaceful” commercial nuclear power plants to produce energy in the next few years, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi said on Tuesday at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris.
Grossi cited Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Namibia, the Philippines, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan as potential countries to begin nuclear projects.
Ten countries have formally reached “the decision phase” to develop facilities, while 17 others are in the evaluation phase.
Within a few years, there will be another dozen or thirteen nuclear countries, announced the IAEA official.
Based on IAEA estimates, doubling the world’s nuclear reactor capacity — now at around 400 units — is necessary to meet the Paris climate agreement’s goals.
