One of the United States’ oldest official holidays—Thanksgiving—had perhaps its most emblematic festivity interrupted yesterday in New York City by demonstrators protesting Israeli treatment of Palestinians.
The 97th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a highly revered mainstay of the holiday, was the latest American forum upon which advocates for social justice thrust their passionate voices to object to what essentially has amounted to the U.S. lending unfettered credence to the Israeli narrative through its blind financial backing of the latter’s military forces, obviously exacerbated by the Gaza conflict.
The USA Today reported that local news affiliates published videos appearing to show demonstrators in white jumpsuits crossing spectator barricades adjacent to the parade. Banners which read, “Liberation for Palestine and Planet” were prominently displayed, while the jumpsuits themselves were emblazoned with the words, “Capitalism,” “Colonialism,” and “Racism.”
It appeared that some protestors actually glued themselves to the street pavement, then poured a reddish liquid over each other in an apparent attempt to simulate blood. Security forces appeared to be successful in removing the demonstrators from the area, with a fate of handcuffs awaiting those involved.
No word yet is out on the number of protestors involved, and Macy’s—one of the U.S.’s oldest department stores—had not yet as of press time responded to an email request for any commentary on the incident.
