The Moroccan national football team showcased their prowess by securing a 2-0 win against Tanzania at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday, during Africa’s eliminations for the World Cup 2026 qualifiers, highlighting Morocco’s dominance in Group E.
In spectacular fashion, the Maestro Hakim Ziyech turned the field upside down with a long-range shot from midfield that the goalkeeper was unable to evade, opening the scoring for Morocco in the 28th minute.
However, the first half wasn’t without its share of drama, as Achraf Hakimi missed a penalty in the second minute of the match, and Youssef En-Nesyri–though he redeemed himself in the 33rd minute–had his goal disallowed due to an offsides infraction.
Undeterred, En-Nesyri turned the tide in the 53rd minute of the second half, securing a second goal for Morocco and solidifying their lead. The team, under the guidance of coach Walid Regragui, displayed a commanding performance, dominating the match and creating numerous scoring opportunities.
The victory not only provided for the Atlas Lions’ ascendancy to the top of Group 5 in the race for 2026 World Cup qualification, but also underlined the competitiveness of the African eliminations.
Morocco has three points and thus sits in a four-way tie with Zambia, Niger and Tanzania, while Congo dwells at the bottom of the group with no points accrued as of yet.
With the upcoming World Cup 2026 to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Morocco finished 4th in WC 2022, and is currently ranked as the 13th best team in the world, as well as first in the CAF list. Without argument, it is a solid contender on the continental and global stage.
