Nearly 400 migrants from sub-Saharan African countries tried to storm into the occupied enclave of Sebta on Friday, reported Spanish news agency EFE.
The third such mass assault in just the last few weeks (one on October 30, another on November 1, and the third on November 17), the attempt occurred in the early hours of the morning, with some of the would-be migrants armed with projectiles and sharp weapons. The Moroccan authorities arrested several.
According to data released by the Interior Ministry, Moroccan authorities have thwarted one hundred attempts to storm into the occupied enclaves of Sebta and Melilla over the last five years, involving approximately 17,500 individuals.
In 2022, there were 16 attempts to jump over the cities’ fences, as compared to just one attempt in the last five months of 2023, owing to the tightening of anti-illegal migration measures.
