Local authorities in the Ain Chok district of Casablanca made a startling discovery resulting in the seizure on Thursday evening of 47 pairs of blue jeans with labels erroneously indicating made in “the Republic of Morocco” in Arabic.
The items were found in the company AC&CO’s Casablanca’s store located in Marjane Californie shopping center, which is headquartered in Résidence Azur on Boulevard d’Anfa.
The labels sewn inside the garments show the origin, what the fabric is made of, and care instructions in 6 languages including English, Italian, Arabic, and Turkish. The printed textile composition shown on the label raises technical, legal, and economic questions, particularly regarding the manufacturing process.
The discovery raises the issue of manufacturer accountability with respect to the accuracy of information printed on or woven into labels on local or imported products.
Morocco has launched a verification procedure to inspect labels attached to the company’s apparel or adhered to the packaging, to assess the degree of conformity with all required/recommended Moroccan regulations.
