Morocco is among the countries which face high ecological threats with an overall score of 4.71 on a scale of 5, according to The Ecological Threat Report (ETR).
The report, compiled by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), assesses threats relating to food insecurity, water risk, natural disasters, and demographic pressure.
Morocco scored 3 out of 5 in food insecurity, 1.1 in natural disasters, 1.51 in demographic pressure, and 4.7 in the water risk category.
IEP predicted that by 2050, 2.8 billion people will reside in countries facing severe ecological threats, up from 1.8 billion in 2023, with 1.1 billion of these people living in countries with low societal resilience.
Ecological threats are considerably higher in sub-Saharan Africa than in any other region, as almost all of the 103 sub-national areas that face severe threats across all four domains are located in sub-Saharan Africa.
Nineteen of the 30 hotspot countries facing severe environmental challenges and poor levels of social resilience lie in Africa south of the Sahara. Ethiopia, Niger, Somalia, and South Sudan are the four most vulnerable nations, added the report.
