Morocco has endorsed the U.S. Political Declaration on Responsible Military Use of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy, the U.S. Department of State announced on Wednesday in a press release.
The Declaration aims to build international consensus around responsible behavior and guide states’ development, deployment, and use of military AI. It will also provide a basis for exchanging best practices and building states’ capacities, which will allow endorsing states to share experiences and ideas.
The goals of the Political Declaration include commitment to strong and transparent norms that apply across military domains, regardless of a system’s functionality or scope of potential effects, and the right to self-defense and states’ ability to responsibly develop and use AI in the military domain.
The United States will convene a regular dialogue among member states to further promote international support for and implementation of these responsible practices.
Endorsing states will meet in the first quarter of 2024 to begin this next phase.
Morocco is the only North African country to join this declaration. Other member countries include Spain, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, among others.
